The 2026–27 College Football Playoff remains a 12-team bracket. The field includes five automatic conference-champion paths plus seven at-large selections, with a Notre Dame provision that can reduce the at-large count to six. Seeds 1–4 receive first-round byes; seeds 5–12 play on campus at the higher seed.

The format was formally retained for 2026–27 by the CFP Management Committee, so this guide focuses on the rules in effect for the current season rather than older versions of the playoff.

How the 12-team CFP field is built

The CFP’s current format lists automatic bids for the champions of the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12 and SEC, plus one automatic bid for the highest-ranked champion from the American, Conference USA, MAC, Mountain West, Pac-12 or Sun Belt.

The remaining seven places are at-large bids to the best remaining teams in the selection committee ranking. Notre Dame receives an automatic bid if it is ranked in the CFP top 12 on Selection Day; if that happens, the at-large total falls from seven to six.

Seeds 1–4 get the first-round byes

The top four seeds do not play in the first round. Seeds 5–12 meet in four campus games:

First-round matchup Host
No. 5 vs No. 12 No. 5
No. 6 vs No. 11 No. 6
No. 7 vs No. 10 No. 7
No. 8 vs No. 9 No. 8

Automatic qualification and seeding are different questions

An automatic qualifier is guaranteed a place in the field. That does not automatically make the team a top-four seed. The current CFP format follows the selection committee’s ranking for seeding, and automatic qualifiers outside the top 12 are placed in order at the bottom of the seeding.

This distinction matters because earlier versions of the 12-team format linked byes more directly to conference champions.

How quarterfinal bowl selection works

The No. 1 seed selects its quarterfinal bowl site and the semifinal site into which it would advance with a quarterfinal win. Then the No. 2 seed and No. 3 seed choose from the remaining quarterfinal bowl paths. The No. 4 seed receives the final quarterfinal bowl slot.

The bracket itself then dictates which first-round winner enters each quarterfinal. There is no reseeding to avoid a rematch or same-conference game.

How the selection committee ranks teams

The committee produces the ranking that determines the field and seeds. Selection is not a simple computer formula. The committee evaluates teams using its published protocol and comparable evidence, including performance and schedule context.

That is why a team’s record alone does not automatically settle every close comparison.

Why strength of schedule matters

Teams do not play identical opponents. Schedule strength helps put a record in context, especially when at-large teams have similar win-loss profiles.
