NBA TV and the NBA Channel can appear side by side in modern streaming menus, but they should not be treated as the same service. NBA TV is the league’s established subscription television network, while the NBA Channel is a free distribution channel available on multiple connected-TV and streaming platforms.
The distinction matters because the names sound interchangeable even though access, programming and live-game rights can differ.
What is NBA TV?
NBA TV is the NBA’s long-running league network. It carries basketball programming, studio coverage, analysis, classic content and selected live events. The NBA’s current support materials still list NBA TV subscriptions as purchasable through NBA.com, alongside NBA League Pass.
NBA TV is therefore best understood as a subscription network product rather than simply a free digital feed. Availability can vary by provider and market, so fans should verify access through the NBA App, NBA.com or their television provider.
What is the NBA Channel?
The NBA Channel is a free NBA-branded channel distributed across connected-TV and streaming platforms. Official NBA G League materials for the 2026 Next Up Game stated that the NBA Channel was available free on Roku, Samsung, Tubi, Pluto, Fire TV, Prime Video, Xumo, Fubo, Xfinity, DirecTV and DISH.
That same official source shows why the free channel matters: the 2026 G League Next Up Game was carried on the NBA Channel. In other words, the NBA Channel can include live event programming, but fans should not assume it carries the same game inventory as NBA TV or NBA League Pass.

This means NBA fans may encounter three different league-branded viewing paths: NBA TV, NBA League Pass and the free NBA Channel. Each has a different role.
National game rights are separate again
The NBA’s current national media agreements run through the 2035-36 season with Disney, NBCUniversal and Amazon. Beginning with the 2025-26 season, national games are distributed across ABC/ESPN, NBC/Peacock and Prime Video. The NBA also launched its Tap to Watch system to direct fans from NBA digital properties to the correct live-game destination.
That broader rights structure is important because neither NBA TV nor the NBA Channel should be treated as a universal destination for every national NBA game.
Why fans see so many NBA viewing products
Modern sports distribution mixes traditional networks, direct subscriptions, free ad-supported channels and third-party streaming rights. One brand can therefore operate several different products at once without those products having identical rights.
