The NBA salary cap is not a simple hard ceiling. Teams can operate above the cap through permitted exceptions and existing contracts, but the luxury-tax line and the first and second aprons add progressively stronger financial and roster-building consequences.

For 2026-27, the NBA set the salary cap at $164.961 million, the tax level at $200.428 million, the first apron at $209.015 million and the second apron at $221.686 million. Those figures change every season, so the structure matters more than memorizing one year’s numbers.

The four numbers to know

2026-27 threshold Amount Why it matters
Salary cap $164.961M Baseline team-salary limit; exceptions can permit spending above it
Luxury-tax line $200.428M Teams above it can owe tax payments
First apron $209.015M Triggers additional roster-building restrictions
Second apron $221.686M Triggers the strongest set of current apron restrictions

Why teams can spend above the salary cap

The NBA cap is commonly described as a “soft cap” because the Collective Bargaining Agreement contains exceptions. A team may be able to re-sign its own players, use designated exceptions or complete certain transactions even when team salary is already above the basic cap line.

That does not mean the cap is meaningless. The available mechanisms narrow as salary rises, and the aprons can remove flexibility entirely for specific transaction types.

What is the luxury tax?

The luxury tax is a financial system layered above the salary cap. A team whose payroll exceeds the tax line can owe payments based on how far it is over and other CBA factors.

The tax is not the same as the salary cap and is not the same as the aprons. A team can be above the cap without being above the tax line.

What is the first apron?

The first apron sits above the luxury-tax line and acts as a roster-building boundary. Certain transactions can hard-cap a team at the first apron, meaning the club cannot finish that transaction if team salary would exceed the permitted threshold.

The exact restrictions depend on the transaction and current CBA rules, so front offices must model not only salary today but the consequences of each move.

What is the second apron?

The second apron is the more restrictive upper band. It was designed to make it harder for the highest-spending teams to continually add talent through mechanisms that are available to teams with more room.

The practical effect is strategic: crossing the second apron can reduce trade flexibility and access to certain exceptions, so a contract’s cost is not just its salary. It can also alter which future moves remain legal.

Mid-level exceptions are not all the same

The NBA’s 2026-27 release lists three different Mid-Level Exception amounts depending on team salary status: the non-taxpayer MLE, taxpayer MLE and room MLE. That is a good example of why “they can just use the mid-level” is incomplete analysis.

The team’s existing salary position determines which tool is available.

Why Bird rights matter

One of the cap system’s most important ideas is that teams can often exceed the cap to retain qualifying players through Bird-related exceptions. This helps teams keep players they developed or acquired rather than forcing every above-cap roster to dismantle immediately.

But retaining a player can still push the team into the tax or apron zones, where different consequences begin.

Cap space and spending power are not identical

A team with no cap space can still have legal ways to add or retain salary. A team with cap space may have more freedom to sign outside free agents but lose access to certain exceptions once it chooses the cap-space route.

That is why NBA offseason analysis should ask: cap space, exception room, tax status or apron status?

FAQ

Is the NBA salary cap a hard cap?

No. It is a soft-cap system with exceptions, although specific transactions can create hard-cap limits at an apron.

Can a team spend above the second apron?

Team salary can exceed that line, but doing so brings major roster-building restrictions and financial consequences under the CBA.

Does being over the cap automatically mean paying luxury tax?

No. The tax threshold is higher than the salary-cap line.

Why do the cap numbers change every year?

The CBA ties league salary economics to basketball-related income and annual cap calculations, so thresholds are reset for each season.

What is the NBA salary floor?

The minimum team salary is the amount teams are required to spend under the CBA. For 2026-27, the NBA announced a minimum team salary of $148.465 million.

What is the difference between the first and second apron?

Both sit above the luxury-tax line, but the second apron carries the stronger set of roster-building restrictions. Crossing an apron can affect which exceptions and trade structures remain available.

What are Bird rights?

Bird-related exceptions can allow a team to exceed the salary cap to re-sign qualifying players. They are a major reason an above-cap team may still be able to retain its own player.

What is the mid-level exception?

It is a CBA mechanism that can give qualifying teams spending power above the basic cap. The amount and type available depend on the team’s salary position.

Bottom line

Think of the NBA system as layers: cap → tax → first apron → second apron. The higher a team climbs, the more expensive and restrictive roster building becomes.
